Vuohelma was born in 2016 out of enthusiasm for the beneficial effect of natural, homemade cosmetics on the skin, hair and also the environment. Behind Vuohelma is Petra Juvela, sideline entrepreneur, farmer's wife and mother of two children. Petra makes Vuohelma's products by hand on the farm in Kokemäki, Kauvatsa village.
Background
Petra has always been interested in cosmetics, and worked for 15 years as a representative of two cosmetic brands. I received good training for the duties of a representative, and thus my knowledge of skin care and cosmetics ingredients deepened. Little by little, the idea of making skin care products for commercial application started to smolder in my mind. Petra had made products for her own use, but the step into commercial activity still seemed far away. A favorable opportunity for this came when a goat farm from Noormark announced in the spring of 2016 that it would sell the recipes for goat milk cosmetics it had developed. Petra had used the cosmetic products of this small brand before and found them to be very good and caring, so at that point the only right solution was to seize the opportunity and buy a recipe to get started. Since then, the journey has continued with Vuohelma's own brand, developing recipes and designing new products. The product range includes a wide range of gentle skin care products: goat's milk-based cleaning products, deodorants, moisturizers, bar soaps and hair care products.
From raw materials
The products contain only genuine, natural ingredients such as goat's milk, honey, beeswax, sea buckthorn oil, shea butter, cocoa butter and hemp seed oil. Because the products are made with goat's milk, they are very caring and gentle. The products do not contain sulfates or parabens. Hair care bars, face soap, deodorants, moisturizer bars and bar soaps are completely preservative-free. The preservative used in moisturizers and facial water for product safety is ECOCERT certified.
The well-being of animals is close to Petra's heart, and it is important for her to be able to pick up goat's milk from a neighboring farmer from a small producer in Punkalaitum. Petra also procures all other raw materials that can be obtained from local producers: honey from Kokemäki, hemp seed oil and hemp seeds from Huittis and beeswax from Lahti.
About the properties of goat's milk in skin care
Why exactly does goat's milk make skin care products especially caring and suitable also for sensitive skin and problem skin? The lactic acid contained in goat's milk helps to balance the skin's own pH value, allowing the nourishing and effective ingredients to be absorbed more easily. Lactic acid also gently stimulates skin cell renewal. Goat milk fat naturally contains caprylic triglycerides. These are also called neutral oil or MCT oil, which is well absorbed and can balance irritated or overtreated skin. Goat's milk naturally contains a lot of vitamin A and selenium, which nourish the skin and hair.
Responsible cosmetics
Since 2018, Vuohelma has been a member of Suomen Ekoyrittäjie and is thus committed to complying with the ecoethical principles mandated by the association. The raw materials are natural and mainly come from local producers or Finnish wholesalers. The production of the products is small-scale and takes place close to the consumer, saving energy. The packaging has as little impact on the environment as possible, mainly plastic-free cardboard boxes and aluminum boxes.
